Chapter 11

Since that sculpted ass moved in next door, I’ve had to get extra batteries for my new vibrator. ’Nuff said.

On Tuesday, Avery woke up with a sore throat that made it almost impossible to talk. She groaned as she tossed on the bed and blinked hard at the pounding that assaulted her head out of nowhere. Great, now she was getting sick. In the middle of summer. There was nothing worse than getting a cold or whatever this turned out to be while it was a hundred degrees outside.

She didn’t hesitate and called her work right away, telling them she needed to take a sick day. After she hung up, she collapsed onto the mattress again and shut her eyes, willing the headache to go away. When she opened them again, she turned to look at the clock and realized she’d fallen back asleep another three hours. At least her head didn’t feel like it was about to explode anymore.

She took her time getting out of bed, dragged herself to the bathroom, and looked in the mirror. Yeesh. Not a pretty sight.

She brushed her teeth and rinsed her face, hoping the water would refresh her, but she was simply wiped out. There was no question about it. She’d stay in her pajamas all day.

The thought of food didn’t appeal much to her, but she knew she needed strength to get better, so she went to the kitchen and made herself tea with toast. Afterward, she got comfortable on the couch, turned on the TV, and zoned out as she munched on the dry toast.

Nothing held her interest and she flipped channels aimlessly. Despite the rest she’d gotten, she was still worn out and burrowed deeper into the cushions, sipping her tea. As much as she tried to pay attention to the screen, James was on her mind.

It had been several days since they’d had sex and he’d called a couple of times to check up on her. Tonight he wanted to come over with takeout, but that would have to wait. She was disappointed she wouldn’t get to spend the evening with him, but she didn’t want to get him sick.

The anxiety she’d felt previously at the thought of hooking up with him had dissipated and she could finally relax. They had slept together, but he’d also offered to be her date at a family function. He’d even stuck up for her when her family had made their usual irritating remarks. That surely meant something. He couldn’t just be her neighbor with benefits.

Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed movement in his apartment and turned to have a look. At the sight that greeted her, her insides instantly clenched.

Instead of seeing James work out or make food or do whatever else he was usually up to, she saw a woman walk around wearing nothing but a towel. Avery jumped off the couch, forgetting all about her aches and pains.
